…myspace-Next Stop, World Domination!

Yes, I must admit that I have a myspace account. I initially set up the account to try and locate some friends that I had lost touch with. I’ve located them, but I’m still a member. Now here’s the dillema–I absolutely dislike the site. It’s gaudy, you have absolutely no control over the ads that are placed on your page, anyone can set up an account in your name–I’ve seen like 5 Lauryn Hill pages, and it sort of seems like a popularity contest. Ha Ha, I have more friends than you. Conversely, it is a great way to network and find long lost friends and college buddies. However, the idea of Rupert Murdoch acquiring myspace just doesn’t sit too well with me. His goal is to get young people to consume more which will put more money in his pocket.

So will I or will I not close my account?

I would love to read comments from anyone who has an opinion–good, bad, or indifferent–about myspace.

Duke University in the News-But Not for Academics or Basketball

In a week designated as sexual harrassment awareness week at Duke University, three university lacrosse players are accused of raping a 27-year old North Carolina Central student. The woman, who is black, alleges that the three men “sexually assaulted, sodomized and strangled” her, as well as spewed racial slurs at her. The incident has incited protests across the city of Durham.

“There’s a wonderful line from ‘I, Claudius’: ‘Let all of the poisons that lurk in the mud out,’ ” said Duke Senior Vice President John F. Burness. “There are people at Duke who work here now whose fathers and mothers and uncles and aunts worked here when it was a segregated institution. Imagine the stories they must have brought home. And now all of that is coming back.”
