A Teething Tot, Talkative 2-Year Old, Teenager, And A Pre-Teen…Oh, What A Weekend!

Despite how hair-raising the title of this post sounds, this weekend was one of the most enjoyable I’ve had in a while. My sister and I have this new (brilliant) arrangement. Now that we live in separate homes (yes, I moved recently!), we alternate weekends with the kids. This weekend I was on baby duty. And on top of having my 8-month old and her 2-year old, my mom dropped off my 14-year old sister and my 11-year old niece. We had a full house of estrogen - from baby to adult :) .a beautiful day in NCThe dreary, cold rainy days of the latter part of last week, segued into a bright, colorful, and unseasonably warm weekend. My mood tends to be affected by the weather. We were blessed to have the rain, but too many consecutive dreary days, and I get slightly depressed. We didn’t do much, it was a lazy weekend. This is pretty much how it went: We opened the doors and let the breeze flow through the house, and opened all the blinds to let the sun shine in (I despise dark homes, and I don’t like artificial light). My daughter was Ms. Curious Cruiser (as usual). She was in everything! Crawling from room to room, zoning in on the tiniest piece of lent or paper on the floor and then trucking across the room to taste-test it. My niece (the 2-yr old)…well, what can I say about her? She is just a rambunctious little firecracker! And I swear her vocabulary is way beyond that of an average 2-year old. She practically talked my ear off this weekend. And although she’s only a year and 9 months older than my daughter (exactly the age diff. of my sister and I :) ), she tries to be Baby 2.0’s mommy. She’s always telling her, “No, you can’t go over there,” or “Get down.” And one of the funniest things she does is put up the peace sign (2 fingers) and says “deuces.” She is so hilarious! It was great having the older kids here because they kept the younger ones occupied while I (tried) to get a little work completed. But they were so into BET, MTV, and The N that at times they were just glued to the TV and didn’t hear a word I said. I had to create a makeshift baby barricade to keep Baby 2.0 out of those forbidden places. Hey, being a mom is just as much about creativity as anything else. I think what made the weekend so wonderful (besides the weather) is the fact that I just slowed down and relaxed. My computer use was minimal, and I just played, played, played with the girls. It was a very joyful couple of days. But I admit, the arrival of Sunday evening and the kids’ moms coming to collect their children was welcomed with a sigh of relief. Again I reiterate - parenting is the toughest job in the world! And I ask parents of multiples, particularly those with children close in age, how do you do it?

Retro Video: Peace From Pain

Video thumbnail. Click to play
Click To Play

I’m currently working on an editing project (video) for a close friend. So tonight I was searching for some files on my external hard drive and came across the video of Baby 2.0’s birth. Don’t be alarmed the video I posted is not, I repeat, NOT a childbirth video. My younger sister caught Baby on tape burping after her first feeding. When I played the video tonight, the memories of the birth and that first day of her existence, all came flooding back to me. The thought of the pain was first. Then I began remember the smells, the soothing sound of my midwife’s voice, how Baby’s juicy lips were the first thing I noticed when I laid eyes on her. How I just felt at peace after 9 stressful months and several hours of painful labor. There’s nothing that I’ve ever done in my 27 years of living that compares to those peaceful moments immediately after my daughter’s birth. I would do it all over again. Um, well…let me think about that one :P .

“The reality is there is nothing that anyone can think or say about me that take away the joy and peace which flow from my heart.”

The above is taken from EbonyMom and is exactly what I needed to read this evening. This quote represents the direction I’m going in my life. Just wish I had read it four months ago.

Breastfeeding and Teeth Don’t Mix

the not so innocent tooth

Can you see that tooth? I was so excited when I first noticed it one day when she laughed. It’s so tiny and cute. But that little sucker is dangerous! Baby 2.0 bit me for the first time a week ago. In the past she’s clamped down, but gums don’t compare to teeth. When it happened I let out an “Ouch!” and she just laughed. Can any breastfeeding moms (or former breastfeeding mothers) give me advice on how to discourage her from using me as a teething ring when she nurses? Or do i just have to grin frown and bear it?

ConvergeSouth 2007: Spreading The Link Love

Today I was going through my purse and came across the many cards I collected from bloggers, photographers, techies, and just overall great people from ConvergeSouth.

First, I think Sue Polinsky needs to be applauded. Organizing ConvergeSouth I’m sure brought many headaches, long days, and lots of frustration. She seems to be fairly dedicated to strengthing Greensboro’s presence and support for the local conference.

Ed Cone (who was blogging throughout the conference) discusses ConvergeSouth’s future…and take a look at the number of comments received. Whoa!

I heard people raving about ConvergeSouth Music (”The Verge”). What can I say? Sean is a hard-working man, always creating.

Andy did a fantastic job with the first annual ConvergeSouth Film Festival. He put together an excellent set of films.

I chatted with Michael Dunn who took some amazing photos of Molly McGinn at The Verge. Continue reading ‘ConvergeSouth 2007: Spreading The Link Love’

ConvergeSouth 2007: It’s A Wrap

The third year of ConvergeSouth has come and gone, and I’m feeling renewed, recharged, and really good about this blogging thing I took up over a year and a half ago. I feel in my element at gatherings like this. In other words, around other geeks :P . In my typical everyday life, I attempt to discuss matters relating to blogging, web design, online video, etc. and people look at me like, huh? But on Saturday I was talking away–asking questions and receiving answers. I wish I hadn’t missed the first day (Friday), but as I try not to dwell on the past I will just focus on the day I was present and the information I walked away with. And also the wonderful people I met. I was most excited about the how-to session on SEO and the panel on CurrentTV.As you all may have noticed, I’ve added a few ads to my site because I wish to move in the direction of monetizing this blog. I figure after a year and a half, it won’t hurt to try. So I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing (only better) and see what happens. Anyway, I mention all this because it connects to the SEO session I attended. Believe it or not, I didn’t know what those three letters meant until about 2 weeks ago when I read a particular comment on a blog post. So, I’m all excited about my discovery of SEO and then realize there’s a session at ConvergeSouth on the subject. The presenter, Brandon Pierce from ShifterTV, was very thorough. I came away with some great tips and tools that I will definitely begin implementing to increase my blog traffic. And good news for anyone wanting the info. He made the presentation available here.

Lucky Dube’s Death…Such a Tragedy

This morning I awoke to the sound of rain and was so happy that mother nature had finally blessed us with some much needed precipitation. Then I began my ritual morning blog roundup and discovered that South African reggae musician, Lucky Dube, had passed away. I was so saddened by this and began wondering how he had died. When I came across this post at Black Looks, I discovered that his death was the result of a failed car-jacking. How tragic. He will be missed by so many…including Baby 2.0 and myself.
