Barack Obama Up Close

Barack Obama in Greensboro

This was such an enjoyable week for me! I learned Monday evening that Barack Obama would make a stop in Greensboro, N.C. to hold a town-hall meeting. I was bummed to find out work would prevent me from attending. Then…

I was asked to live blog the event for the tv station. Whoopee!!!!!!!!!! Now the title of this post is a tad misleading because I was in the building, but not “up close.” In reality, I was more like waaaaaayyy back. I sat in the press section (a first for me) but I couldn’t see a thing! They had us behind the risers so all I could see was the backsides of cameramen. But a photojournalist with our station had an excellent spot and captured these amazing photos of Obama.

I have more to share on the Obama experience. Stay tuned for the next post…

Blogging Barack Obama

I am ecstatic right now. Yesterday I learned Barack Obama would be holding a town hall meeting here in Greensboro, NC. In fact, he’ll be here tomorrow! Tickets sold out in a few hours yesterday! And even if I were lucky enough to snag one, I have to work so…

But I’m not upset. No, not at all. Because I’ve been given the opportunity to live blog from the event! Yep, blogging Barack! This is so great. So tomorrow check me out in the blog section at myfoxwghp.com or on digitalherstory.com.

Lizz Wright’s ‘Hey Mann’: A Beautiful Sadness

Thursday morning, I dropped in to Starbucks for a soy chai and walked out with Lizz Wright’s latest album, The Orchard. I was delighted to find that she remade Sweet Honey in the Rock’s Hey Mann. Her voice complicates my soul. On the one hand the husky, sorrowful sound with a hint of longing…aching, is unbearable; but the sound is so beautiful, it begins to feel good to wallow in my sadness.  The lyrics are practically the story of my last relationship:

Hey mann,
Whatcha doing here?
I don’t remember letting you in.
Hey mann,
How’d you get in here?
You’re in my heart without consent.

I always took pride
in my self control,
To my heart only I had the key.
But something’s gone wrong
in my radar screen.
You slipped by
and you captured me.

I done all I could to keep my head clear,
Logic tells me that this should never be,
But there’s no mistaken the shape I’m in,
Love has filled my every waking day.

Now here’s the strangest thing,
A day has come I thought I’d never see,
I walk smiling in a light glow
and I’m calling out your name,
I’ve lost the battle,
and I’m quite well pleased

Larry King Dances with Janet Jackson

Did anyone else catch Larry King Live last Friday? I watched it when it re-aired Sunday. I actually had to turn the tv because I felt so embarrassed for him. Larry King you shoulda sat this one out. I didn’t know it was possible to be this dance challenged. Actually this has little to do with lacking dance skills or rhythm…the man can’t follow directions. It’s the left arm not the right Larry!

So Glad My Brother is Not a Statistic

Nia adores her uncle Kamau

We all want to be loved.
Imagine if you were never loved, what type of person you would be?
Perhaps like Lawrence Alvin Lovette, Jr. or Demario James Atwater.
I don’t know really.
Don’t presume to know what kind of life they’ve led — in just 17 and 21 years respectively.
So sad.
How can we ever claim freedom if crimes such as these continue to flourish in the U.S.?
This case is just one of the many atrocities that’s played out in the very public sphere in recent years.
I am so sick of it.
School shootings,
Rapes,
Murders…
And this is not a black problem, or a white problem.
This is an American problem.

That’s my brother pictured above. With the way he dresses, I know some people automatically prejudge him as a thug or gangsta. Fortunately my brother has not succumbed to the stereotype that is so often assigned to black males. He is such a thoughtful and kind person. And an excellent father to his 4-year-old son. He is an excellent male role model for my daughter.
