ConvergeSouth 2007: It’s A Wrap

The third year of ConvergeSouth has come and gone, and I’m feeling renewed, recharged, and really good about this blogging thing I took up over a year and a half ago. I feel in my element at gatherings like this. In other words, around other geeks :P . In my typical everyday life, I attempt to discuss matters relating to blogging, web design, online video, etc. and people look at me like, huh? But on Saturday I was talking away–asking questions and receiving answers. I wish I hadn’t missed the first day (Friday), but as I try not to dwell on the past I will just focus on the day I was present and the information I walked away with. And also the wonderful people I met. I was most excited about the how-to session on SEO and the panel on CurrentTV.As you all may have noticed, I’ve added a few ads to my site because I wish to move in the direction of monetizing this blog. I figure after a year and a half, it won’t hurt to try. So I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing (only better) and see what happens. Anyway, I mention all this because it connects to the SEO session I attended. Believe it or not, I didn’t know what those three letters meant until about 2 weeks ago when I read a particular comment on a blog post. So, I’m all excited about my discovery of SEO and then realize there’s a session at ConvergeSouth on the subject. The presenter, Brandon Pierce from ShifterTV, was very thorough. I came away with some great tips and tools that I will definitely begin implementing to increase my blog traffic. And good news for anyone wanting the info. He made the presentation available here.

41 Layoffs at the News and Record

I was talking to my mom today and she asked if I heard about the 41 employees laid off at the Greensboro News and Record. No I had not heard…not on the TV, and not on the radio. But, when I researched online, I found a short article as well as a brief blog post about the matter. In the article, the N&R posits the layoffs were the result of a “business reorganization.” It goes on to describe the “changing media environment” and the resulting effect on the newspaper industry:

The expanding use of the Internet for news, information and advertising has placed traditional news companies in an increasingly competitive environment. Many newspaper companies, including the News & Record, are in the process of reinventing themselves to serve customers in new and different ways.

The blog post, written by N&R editor, John Robinson, laid out facts but gave no specifics. In an update post, Robinson states:

Next week we’ll begin reinventing the paper…The reinvention will center on:

  • Public service journalism, including enterprise, investigative and community.
  • Being audience-centric, not format-centric. A faster movement into online and mobile.
  • Innovation and experimentation. We can create better cool, useful stuff.

This new focus not only sounds good, it is a necessity in an age where citizen journalism and the Internet are becoming integral parts of our lives. As Robinson is N&R editor, I decided to check what the other folks were talking about. Ed Cone did his research and reported a source as saying:

Some newsroom reporters learned about the layoffs when they got calls from other newsrooms. I’m so angry. There are a lot of really good people that I’m not going to see in this office again.

Calling All Citizen Journalists

The following is an excerpt from an email I received from the Black Family Channel:

Black Family Channel (www.blackfamilychannel.com) is developing a national show like no other called UR Television. The mission is to share the important stories in our communities that are often overlooked by mainstream media. Along with the Internet, digital video cameras, and editing software it is now possible for the average citizen to produce thought provoking stories to educate, enlighten, and entertain.

That’s where you come in. This show is designed around the idea that news content needs to be democratized, giving everyone, not just the media conglomerates, control of the stories that are told. A citizen journalist can be anyone who desires to find truth, expose inequality, and has the technical savvy to produce a story. If there’s a problem that is plaguing your neighborhood, if there’s an outstanding citizen whose contributions in your community needs to be shared, or if you’ve produced a humorous, entertaining commentary on life we’d like to see it.

We’re looking for compelling stories including, podcasts, videoblogs, documentaries and trailers that run up to four minutes. Stories are everywhere. H.I.V. affects men, women and children, is there an organization in your community to help people deal with the challenges? Black men are more likely to be incarcerated than go to college, is there anything being done in your area to reduce this trend? How about the issue of interracial dating, how do people in your community feel about it? If you have an interesting idea, pick up a camera, do and interview or two, edit a short piece, then share it with UR Television.

Submission format: BetaSP, MiniDV, DVD
Address: Black Family Channel
