Memorial Day at the Zoo

Nia conked out!I had planned to write this post on Memorial Day, or at least the day after but it took me two days to recover from our trip to the zoo. Let me tell you, if you want to get a weeks worth of exercise in one day, visit the N.C. Zoo! At the entrance we were handed brochure guides and the first thing i noticed — 5 MILES of walking trails! Whew! glad I had my sneakers on…yes I saw a woman wearing heels, now what was she thinking?!!cousin and niece having a fantabulous time!

I hadn’t visited the zoo in a looooong time. I was never really fond of it as a kid, the memories etched in my mind are of the caged animals, stinking smells, the heat, and being daggone tired from so much walking. Well…this time it was stinking, hot, and exhausting. So not too much different. BUT despite how much it seems I’m complaining, I actually had a good time. I think being with the kids and seeing how much fun they were having, made the trip so much more enjoyable for me. My niece (to the right, rear) was not satisfied until she saw Simba (the lions), Timon (the meerkats), and Pumba (a warthog…we had to settle for the Red River Hogs). My cousin’s son came prepared wearing his Curious George shirt :) .

My favorite exhibits:

And these baboons were engaged in some questionable activity. I’ll let you use your imagination, I’ll just say that one in front was bobbing it’s head up and down.

Momma Cuttin’ Up!

I hadn’t been out on the town in a looooong time when my younger sister (left), the party girl, suggested we hit the club for the ArtLifestyle Concert @ JABS Ultrabar. Uh-oh! I was like a soda bottle shaken up, pressure building…then off comes the top! I let loose! Continue reading ‘Momma Cuttin’ Up!’

What Does an African Look Like?

nia at the park

The other day I heard one of the most ignorant comments. I mean truly ignorant because this man was clueless, I had to school him. We were at the Sprint store Monday trying to get my phone fixed. I was told there was a long wait for service so I sat down, and this man struck up a conversation. An older black man, I’m guessing in his 60s. He starts asking me all these question…interrogating me it seemed. Then he asked me about my daughter’s father. “So where is her father?” was the exact question. None of his business, but being polite I answered. I told him he lived in another country. “What country?” Dang, this man is nosy! But again, I answered the question. I wasn’t specific but I told him a country in Africa. So he stares long and hard at Nia and replies, “she don’t look African.” Huh? Continue reading ‘What Does an African Look Like?’

Obama: Change We Can Believe In?

change we can believe inAdmittedly, I hate politics. I’ve always felt politicians were legal con artists. Smooth talkers who spit the right game to get what they want. I’m hoping Obama is different. I feel that Obama is different. And history says my gut feelings are usually correct.

Last week, I had the pleasure of being in the same room with this man (albeit a very large room and I was lucky to catch glimpses of him through the photogs legs who were on elevated risers in front of me). But I was there. I saw him. I heard him. And I can tell you, Obama has a presence that automatically uplifts you when he walks in the room. Charisma and humor oozes from this man. He was comfortable on stage, and it was evident to everyone in that room (I’m sure of it). Either he’s the real thing…or he’s a damn good actor. Again, my instinct tells me the former is true. When Obama speaks, it feels as if a common, (extra)ordinary man is speaking…not a politician. Continue reading ‘Obama: Change We Can Believe In?’

Barack Obama Up Close

Barack Obama in Greensboro

This was such an enjoyable week for me! I learned Monday evening that Barack Obama would make a stop in Greensboro, N.C. to hold a town-hall meeting. I was bummed to find out work would prevent me from attending. Then…

I was asked to live blog the event for the tv station. Whoopee!!!!!!!!!! Now the title of this post is a tad misleading because I was in the building, but not “up close.” In reality, I was more like waaaaaayyy back. I sat in the press section (a first for me) but I couldn’t see a thing! They had us behind the risers so all I could see was the backsides of cameramen. But a photojournalist with our station had an excellent spot and captured these amazing photos of Obama.

I have more to share on the Obama experience. Stay tuned for the next post…
