Strawberry Pickin’

We had a ball this past weekend! This year our city turns 200-years-old. On Saturday we enjoyed some of the bicentennial festivities, like the parade and downtown birthday bash.

Afterwards (yes, we were trying to wear the kids out), we went strawberry picking at a local farm. Locally grown, pesticide-free, juicy, sweet strawberries…yum!

Fact: 1-year-olds think slightly mud-covered strawberries with bits of leaves are just as delicious as washed strawberries. I tried to keep Nia from eating the strawberries before we had washed them, but my attempts were futile…she managed to gobble up 3 during our picking.

Breastfeeding Dilemma: To Wean or Not to Wean?

My mom has Nia for the weekend, including tomorrow. I planned to stop by her house today to deliver a few toys and Nia’s toothbrush. So I told my mom I would nurse her for a few minutes before heading to work.

“Well how about you use these days that she’s away from you to go ahead and wean her,” said my wise mother.

OK, so I have mentioned to my entire family, a few friends, and a couple of co-workers that I’m planning to wean Nia because I need my life back! The child thinks she owns my boobies! But that was all talk. Do I really have the strength to permenantly remove my sweetie from her milk-milks (as my niece calls them)?

Granted, I only breastfeed now twice a day — in the morning before daycare and at night before bed. But these are some of the sweetest moments, times I feel an extra special bond with my daughter. So I’m struggling…she’s 15 months now, is it time to wean her?

Ode to My Mother

Nia with her grandmaMeteorologists are predicting stormy weather for tomorrow. Incidentally, that’s Mother’s Day and although this may sound strange, the storms seem fitting. Let me explain:

This is my second Mother’s Day. I barely slipped in last year, as my daughter was just a wee little thing. So for the past year and change, I’ve endured my share of storms. According to my mother, and every other mom I speak with, I have yet to witness the really difficult stuff.

I feel that the love I have for my mother grows stronger with each passing day. I realize she surely weathered many a storm raising 7 children, and for many years as a single parent after my parents divorced. The thought is unimaginable that what I’m going through with my toddler she did 7 times over!

Mommyhood is such a beautiful experience, but the toughest job I’ve ever had! On this Mother’s Day, I will take the time to make sure my mom knows she is very much loved and appreciated. I feel so grateful to have a mom who exhibited the wisdom and compassion needed to raise loving and intelligent children. Because of her, my siblings and I are disciplined, determined, compassionate, intelligent, and myriad other attributes that we owe in part to our upbringing.

Happy Mother’s Day mom!
Thanks for all that you gave and continue to give that has allowed me to be a great mom to my own child.

The Most Beautiful Birthday Cake

Anaia's yummy birthday cake

You see that beautiful birthday cake posted above? Best cake I’ve ever tasted!!!!!!!!! My sister wasn’t planning on throwing a party for her daughter’s 3rd birthday. But since Nia’s fiesta, it’s all the child’s been talking about! And she had 2 specific requests: blue and purple colors, and Dora! Man I’m happy she caved in, this cake from Maxie B’s had fresh strawberries inside and tasted delish!

National Day of Prayer: Please Keep Me From Partaking in Some Foolishness!

Today, May 1, is National Day of Prayer.  I’m reaching out to all of my readers to pray for me.  I need the strength to say NO to submitting a story and photo here.  The site is a bunch of mayhem and foolishness (to quote Niecy Nash), but when I happened upon it the other day I just got the urge to do something crazy!  Please keep me in your prayers because the temptation is strong.

Baskin-Robbins 31 Cent Night *Smile*

Just found out Baskin-Robbins has a 31 cent scoop night tonight from 5 pm to 10 pm. Wanted to spread the word to all of you who love ice cream as much as I do! I’ll be stopping for a scoop on my drive home from work — a nice (cheap) evening treat!
